The tachinid Exorista larvarum (L.), a polyphagous gregarious larval endoparasitoid of Lepidoptera, was reared from egg to fecund adult on media containing commercial meat homogenates for babies as the main ingredient. Four media, each containing a diverse homogenate supplemented with extract of Galleria mellonella L. pupae, were tested first. Despite the difference in nutrient content, the kind of homogenate did not significantly affect the adult yields (30.2 to 40.7%) or puparial weights. Two other diets free of host materials (I and II) were then tested. Both were based on Gerber veal homogenate combined with different amounts of yeast extract and chicken egg yolk and were supplemented with wheat germ (I) or saccharose (II). Adult yields (28.7 to 32.7%) and puparial weights did not differ significantly between the two diets. Fly longevity and fecundity of the females obtained on diet I were comparable to those of the females emerged from puparia formed in G. mellonella larvae. Male and female puparial weights were, however, higher and development times longer on the diet than in the host.

We investigated the response of the tachinid fly, Exorista japonica (Townsend), to host frass or its extracts in order to clarify the host location mechanisms of female flies in a potential host habitat. Host searching time in a patch and the number of patch visits were analyzed by using a frass-containing patch which was excreted by host larvae, Mythimna separata (Walker) (Lepidoptera: Noctuidae), and patches to which host frass extracts were applied. E. japonica females were arrested in response to the host-frass-containing patch after contacting the frass with their front tarsi, thereby spending most of the time to search the patch and to revisit the host-frass patch. While host-searching time in the patch by the females was longest at their first visit of a patch with host frass, searching time decreased with successive visits. The female flies also exhibited area-restricted searching with methanol extracts of the host frass. Area-restricted searching activity increased with the concentration of host-frass extract, i.e., total searching time in the patch and the number of patch visits varied in a dose-dependent manner. E. japonica females likely employ chemicals in host frass as arrestants in host location.

Host location and selection cues in a generalist tachinid parasitoid
Tachinid flies are diverse and ecologically important insect parasitoids. However, the means by which tachinid species locate and select hosts are poorly known. Many tachinids exhibit unusually wide host ranges and they also possess well-developed visual systems. These characteristics suggest that tachinids differ from parasitic wasps in their reliance on various sensory modes and types of cues. A series of behavioral assays using the generalist tachinid Exorista mella Walker (Diptera: Tachinidae) were conducted to examine what types of cues this parasitoid uses to locate and accept hosts, and how the cues used may reflect its ecological relationships with hosts. Female E. mella responded strongly to host motion in assays using both live hosts and host corpses, and this cue is shown to be an important elicitor of attack behavior. Females also responded to volatile chemicals associated with damaged food plants of their host in an olfactometer. Flies responded only weakly to direct visual contact with stationary hosts and odors directly associated with hosts. The behavior of female E. mella changed with experience such that more experienced flies recognized and attacked hosts more readily than did inexperienced flies. The use of general olfactory and visual cues by E. mella may be an effective strategy by this polyphagous parasitoid to locate a broad range of potential hosts.
